    Clifford Buxton Twigg born 16th December 1899 was christened Clifford Robotham Buxton on 17th January 1900 at St Thomas Brampton. His mother was Mary Buxton of Shepley Street, a Single Woman. His middle name Robotham does not appear on the birth registration. It was common at the time to use the father’s name as a middle name to put pressure on the man to marry. Clifford was adopted when Reuben Twigg married Clifford’s mother in 1902. Clifford Twigg joined the Army on the 5th June 1918 aged 18 years 5½ months. He was five feet one and five eighth inches tall with a 32 inch chest weighing 6 stone 10 lbs which is about 3 stone below what would be considered normal nowadays. He was discharged on 30th September 1918 after contracting tuberculosis while in the army. His address on discharge was 10 Beehive Yard.
